PLAINFIELD, Ill. (WIFR) - A juvenile is in police custody after he was stopped by a relative Friday in a plot to carry out a shooting at an elementary school, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 1 p.m., May 22, deputies were called out to the 2400 block of Helmar Lane in Plainfield Township.

Upon arrival, deputies say they found a male juvenile who was armed with a firearm being pinned down by a relative who had called 911.

Initial findings show the juvenile was allegedly on his way to conduct a school shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School when the relative intervened, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies detained the minor and report recovering a Glock handgun, a backpack containing several loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, gloves and other items.

The Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield School District 202 were contacted about the incident Friday, which was the last day of the school year, and security measures were taken at school facilities, including a police presence.

The juvenile was taken to a local hospital after making suicidal and homicidal statements to EMS on scene, according to deputies.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office says there is no threat to the community. Charges have yet to be filed but the investigation is ongoing.
